The Yusuhara Wooden Bridge Museum stands at 3799-3 Tarogawa in Yusuhara, Kochi Prefecture, Japan. Kengo Kuma and Associates designed it, and the mayor of Yusuhara, Tomio Yano, is credited as client. The project area is listed at about 14,736 square meters (158,600 square feet).
Its framing method is inspired by a traditional wooden bridge. Many timber members extend out from both ends to form bridge-like girders. The two ends balance around a central pier that carries the vertical loads. The wood is laminated timber made from small pieces.
The overlapping timbers follow a traditional bracket arrangement, which the architects describe as a kind of wooden masonry. A separate roof-shaped atelier and gallery at the cliff edge uses a similar frame, turned upside down. The design is meant to fit the topography of the site and to support regional culture.
