The Yanggakdo International Hotel stands on Yanggak Island in the Taedong River, about 1.2 miles (2 km) southeast of Pyongyang's center. It is described as the largest operating hotel in North Korea and the country's tenth-tallest building. It is 560 feet (170 m) tall, with a slowly revolving restaurant on the 47th floor. France's Campenon Bernard Construction Company built it between 1986 and 1992, and it opened in 1996 as North Korea's first luxury hotel. The article names no architect, client or style.

The ground floor has reception, shops and a bar, and the second floor has restaurants. The basement holds a bowling alley, pool room, sauna, swimming pool and casino. A nine-hole golf course of 97,000 square feet (9,000 m²) on the grounds was demolished in 2011 for a Chinese-funded health complex.

The fifth floor is off-limits to guests and has no elevator button. One Western travel agency describes it as an ordinary service level.
