The Xalapa Museum of Anthropology is in Xalapa, the capital of Veracruz in eastern Mexico, and it is part of the Universidad Veracruzana. Its current building opened in 1986. The page credits Edward Durell Stone as its designer. Governor Agustín Acosta Lagunes commissioned the design in 1985 from EDSA, a New York City firm, and Paul Balev of that firm is named as the architect.
The museum holds about 25,000 pieces. It is known for artifacts from Mesoamerican Gulf Coast cultures, including the Olmec, Totonac and Huastec peoples, and it holds several Olmec colossal heads. The source describes it as the second most important anthropology museum in Mexico, after the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City.
The museum was founded in 1957, and the first building opened on November 20, 1960.
