The Library and Learning Center is the centerpiece of the campus of the Vienna University of Economics and Business, in Vienna's second district. Zaha Hadid Architects won the design competition in 2008. The campus has seven buildings and is designed for 24,000 students and 1,800 staff.
The building has 28,000 square meters (about 301,000 square feet) of floor area. A large volume sits above the roof and cantilevers over a public square at the main entrance. That volume holds the main library, function rooms and an elevated cafe. The rest of the building holds classrooms, an auditorium, workspaces and offices.
The facade is inclined at 35 degrees, so the floor plates grow larger toward the top. Dark gray fiber-reinforced concrete panels by Rieder clad the cantilevered volume. White panels cover the rest of the building.
