The Winter Garden Theatre is a Broadway house at 1634 Broadway in Midtown Manhattan's Theater District, near Times Square. William Albert Swasey redesigned the former American Horse Exchange, which was completed in 1896, as a theater that opened on March 20, 1911. The Shubert brothers leased the building, and the Shubert Organization later ran it.
Herbert J. Krapp remodeled the interior in 1922, and it reopened in January 1923. The auditorium has Adam-style detailing, a raked orchestra, one balcony, two tiers of boxes and a ribbed ceiling. Its interior became a New York City landmark in 1988.
Its history includes revues, shows with Al Jolson, several periods as a cinema, and Cats, which ran from 1982 to 2000.
