The Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House in the Dallas Arts District was designed by Foster + Partners, led by Spencer de Grey, with Kendall/Heaton Associates. It is one of four venues in the AT&T Performing Arts Center, and Margot and Bill Winspear gave $42 million. Ground was broken in October 2006. The house opened in the week of October 12 to 18, 2009, and the first opera, Verdi's Otello, played on October 23. The article calls it a 21st-century reinterpretation of the traditional opera house.
It seats 2,200 in a horseshoe layout. A glass facade, a solar canopy with louvers and a Grand Portico shading 3 acres frame it. The Moody Foundation Chandelier hangs 50 feet below the ceiling and has 318 acrylic rods lit by LEDs.
The Dallas Opera moved here from the Music Hall at Fair Park, and the Texas Ballet Theater also performs here. The article gives no hours.
