The Wien Museum stands on Karlsplatz in Vienna, Austria, and tells the history of the city. A 1953 City Council resolution started the project. Oswald Haerdtl placed fourth in a 1953 competition of 80 contestants and 96 designs, and the city then hired him to design the building and its interiors.
The museum opened on April 23, 1959, as the first newly built museum of the Second Republic. The article describes the original design as an unassuming contemporary modern style. It does not state dimensions or materials. Dimitris Manikas roofed the atrium in 2000.
Certov, Winkler + Ruck won a 2015 competition for an overhaul. Reconstruction ran from 2020 to 2023 and added two floors, a pavilion and a plaza, and the museum reopened in December 2023. The former atrium is now a great hall for large objects.
