Weston Hall is home to the J. Robert and Barbara A. Hillier College of Architecture and Design at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark. The Hillier Group of Princeton designed the 1998 building, a southward extension of the older, long Weston Hall. Alan Chimacoff, the firm's chief designer, developed the concept with a faculty committee.
The addition has 111,900 gross square feet (10,400 square meters) and cost $26.6 million. An entrance pavilion joins the old and new sections, and a tall, kinetic atrium links all floors. From the entry you can see the gallery, studio, library, teaching spaces and administrative offices.
The new section is open, with long views toward Newark and New York. It is lit at all hours because students work around the clock. One design idea was a lantern on the hill, reflecting NJIT's bond with the city.
