Weiwuying stands in Fengshan District, Kaohsiung, next to a 66.6-hectare metropolitan park. The article credits Francine Houben and says Mecanoo won the design and construction rights in 2007, so the attribution is unclear. The Executive Yuan launched the project in 2003. Construction was reported complete in October 2017, and the inaugural concert was on October 13, 2018. The National Performing Arts Center took it over on September 10, 2018.

The design is streamlined and wave-like, with a white curved exterior. About 35,000 square meters of curved roof use 4,500 aluminum alloy panels. The structure is reinforced concrete and steel, with interior steel-skinned walls.

It has an Opera House of 2,236 seats, a Concert Hall of 1,981 seats with Taiwan's largest pipe organ, a Playhouse and a Recital Hall. An outdoor theater holds 30,000.
