Weingarten Abbey, or St. Martin's Abbey, stands on the Martinsberg in Weingarten near Ravensburg. It was founded around 900 as a nunnery at Altdorf, and Benedictine monks took over in 1047. After a fire in 1053 the monastery moved to a hill that Welf I gave to the monks. The original church was Romanesque, built from 1124 to 1182.

In 1715 the Romanesque church was largely demolished, and Franz Beer built the Baroque church from 1715 to 1724. Cosmas Damian Asam painted the frescoes, and Joseph Gabler built the organ from 1735 to 1750. The church is about 102 meters long and is described as the largest Baroque church in Germany, nicknamed the Swabian St. Peter's.

The abbey holds a relic of the Precious Blood, and the Blutritt procession has taken place annually since 1849.
