The Waterhouse at South Bund is a 19-room boutique hotel in Shanghai's South Bund district, beside the Huangpu River and the Cool Docks development. Neri&Hu Design and Research Office finished it in 2010 for Cameron Holdings Hotel Management Limited.
The hotel occupies a three-story concrete building that served as a Japanese Army headquarters in the 1930s. The architects restored it and added a fourth floor in Cor-Ten steel, so old and new read as a deliberate contrast. Existing brick and concrete sit beside plaster walls, oak floors and terrazzo.
The project covers about 8,600 square feet (800 square meters). A tall vertical window above the reception desk and corridor windows over the dining room blur the line between public and private space. Rooms and the roof bar look toward the Pudong skyline.
