The Walker Art Center at 725 Vineland Place in Minneapolis grew from Thomas Barlow Walker's collection, first shown in his home in 1879. Walker Art Galleries opened on May 21, 1927, and it became the Walker Art Center in January 1940. Edward Larrabee Barnes designed the building that opened in May 1971. The article describes it as minimalist in the style of its period, with plain modular brick and white interiors.
Herzog & de Meuron designed an expansion that opened in April 2005. Its central tower uses aluminum mesh panels. The center covers 260,000 square feet (24,000 m²) on 17 acres (6.9 ha) and has ten galleries, a cinema, a theater and a restaurant.
The sculpture garden was renovated in 2016 and reopened in spring 2017. Annual attendance is about 700,000. The article gives no hours or admission.
