Vijećnica, the Sarajevo City Hall, was designed in 1891 by Karel Pařík. Criticism from the minister Béni Kállay stopped his work, and Alexander Wittek worked on it in 1892–1893. Ćiril Iveković completed it. Construction ran from 1892 to 1894, and the building was formally opened on April 20, 1896, at a cost of 984,000 crowns.
The style is historical eclecticism, predominantly pseudo-Moorish, drawing on the Islamic art of Spain and North Africa. It was the largest and most representative building of the Austro-Hungarian period in Sarajevo. It served as the city hall until 1949, when it was transferred to the National and University Library.
The building was severely damaged in 1992, including the loss of the library's collections. Restoration came in four stages between 1996 and 2013, and the interior was fully rebuilt. It reopened to the public on July 17, 2014, and is now the seat of the Mayor and City Council.
