Schlaich Bergermann & Partner designed it, and Freeman Fox & Partners and Bharat Bhari Udyog Nigam Limited checked the design. The Hooghly River Bridge Commissioners own it. Construction began on July 3, 1979, and the bridge opened on October 10, 1992.

It is a cable-stayed bridge with 121 cables in a fan arrangement. The total length is 2,700 feet (823 meters), and the main span is 1,500 feet (457.2 meters). The pylons are steel and rise 419 feet (127.6 meters).

The deck is composite steel-reinforced concrete and is 115 feet (35 meters) wide, with six lanes and a toll. The bridge used about 13,200 tonnes of structural steel, and the clearance below is 85 feet (26 meters).
