The Central Library at 350 West Georgia Street in downtown Vancouver was designed by Moshe Safdie with DA Architects and Planners. It was the largest capital project the city had undertaken. Construction began in early 1993, and it opened on May 26, 1995, at a cost of 106.8 million Canadian dollars. The article gives no style and says the exterior resembles the Colosseum in Rome.
A nine-story rectangular book-stack block sits inside a free-standing elliptical colonnaded wall. Reading and study areas are reached by bridges over skylit light wells, and a glass-roofed concourse forms the entry foyer.
The building covers 37,000 square meters with seating for over 1,200. A 21-story office tower is attached.
