The USS Arizona Memorial stands over the sunken battleship in Pearl Harbor, Honolulu. Alfred Preis, a Honolulu architect, designed it, and it was dedicated on Memorial Day, May 30, 1962. The Navy and the National Park Service have run it together since 1980.
The structure is 184 feet (56 meters) long and straddles the sunken hull without touching it. Its two peaks at the ends join in a sag at the center. It has three parts: an entry, an assembly room and a shrine. A marble wall in the shrine lists everyone killed on the Arizona. The memorial marks the resting place of 1,102 of the 1,177 sailors and Marines lost.
Visitors reach it by Navy boat only and must reserve online. The flagpole is attached to the severed mainmast of the ship. Oil still rises from the wreck.
