The This Is the Place Monument stands at the mouth of Emigration Canyon on the east side of Salt Lake City, Utah, in This Is the Place Heritage Park. Mahonri M. Young, a grandson of Brigham Young, was the sculptor. It was dedicated on July 24, 1947, the 100th anniversary of the pioneers entering the Salt Lake Valley.
Young worked on the monument from 1939 to 1947 at Weir Farm in Connecticut. Brigham Young, Heber C. Kimball and Wilford Woodruff stand at the top. Below them are the Mormon pioneers of the 1847 vanguard expedition, as well as the Spanish explorers of the 1776 Domínguez-Escalante expedition, the Donner Party and fur trappers.
The name comes from Brigham Young's remark on first viewing the valley in 1847: "This is the right place, drive on." The monument replaced a much smaller one nearby. The heritage park next to it was built in the mid-1970s.
