The Shed at 545 W. 30th Street was designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro with Rockwell Group, and Thornton Tomasetti engineered the structure and kinetics. The Shed nonprofit oversaw construction, and the city owns the land. Building construction began in mid-2015, and it opened on April 5, 2019. The article describes an architecture of infrastructure.
An exposed steel frame carries an ETFE-clad retractable shell of 16,000 square feet that opens and closes in about five minutes. The shell weighs 8 million pounds and rolls on eight six-foot wheels driven by six 15-horsepower motors.
The building totals 170,000 square feet over eight stories, with 40,000 square feet of column-free exhibition space and a theater for up to 500.
