The Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa's Piazza De Ferrari was designed by Carlo Barabino, who submitted his design on January 31, 1825, for a site once occupied by the San Domenico church. The first stone was laid on March 19, 1826, and it opened on April 7, 1828 with Bellini's Bianca e Fernando, though structure and decoration were not quite finished.
The original auditorium held about 2,500 people in five tiers of 33 boxes and had a rococo ceiling. A British warship's shell hit the roof on February 9, 1941, a fire in 1943 destroyed backstage areas, and an air raid in September 1944 destroyed the front. Carlo Scarpa's design was approved in 1977 but halted by his death.
Aldo Rossi's reconstruction reopened it in June 1991, with 2,000 seats in the hall and 200 in the auditorium per the infobox. The interior is entirely modern, and parts of the original facade were recreated.
