Takatori Catholic Church in Nagata-ku, Kobe, was founded in 1927 and consecrated in 1929. The 1995 Great Hanshin earthquake destroyed the original building. Shigeru Ban designed a temporary Paper Dome built on September 17, 1995, working pro bono, with the church serving as a disaster relief center called the Takatori Church Rescue Base.

The Paper Dome was built from paper tubes, deconstructed in 2005, shipped to Taiwan in 2006 and rebuilt in 2008 in about four months. It now stands in Nantou County, Taiwan, and is used for worship and as a tourist attraction.

The article does not name the architect of the permanent church. Takatori Station is about a 15-minute walk away.
