Tai Kwun is the former Central Police Station compound at 10 Hollywood Road, Central, converted into a heritage and arts center. Herzog & de Meuron led the masterplan, Rocco Design Architects were the executive architects, and Purcell handled conservation. The Hong Kong Jockey Club funded the revitalization. The original buildings date from 1841 to 1925. Work began in 2011, and the compound opened in phases from May 29, 2018.
Sixteen heritage buildings were restored and two new buildings were added, with designs inspired by the site's historic brickwork. The article describes a mix of heritage and contemporary architecture and names no style. Costs were HK$3.7 or 3.8 billion, depending on the source.
A wall and roof collapsed in 2016 and halted work. It earned a UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award of Excellence in 2019 and a RIBA International Award for Excellence in 2021.
