SunnyHills Minami-Aoyama is a small pineapple cake shop at 3-10-20 Minami-Aoyama in Tokyo. Kengo Kuma and Associates designed it for SunnyHills Japan. The site is 175.69 square meters (about 1,890 square feet), and the total floor area is 293 square meters (about 3,150 square feet) over a basement, two floors and a roof.
A three-dimensional timber lattice wraps the walls and ceiling and gives the building a basket-like shape. More than 5,000 meters (16,400 feet) of wooden strips are used. They meet at 30 and 60 degrees, not 90, which forms hundreds of diamond-shaped openings. Some strips are cut shorter to add layering.
The joints use Jiigoku-Gumi, a traditional Japanese system, and the architect states that no glue or nails are used. The structure is reinforced concrete, partly timber. The shop occupies the two lower floors. The entrance sits at one corner, and planting flanks the stairs.
