Strasbourg Cathedral was begun in 1015 and completed in 1439. Erwin von Steinbach is credited from 1277 to 1318, followed by his son Johannes and grandson Gerlach. Ulrich Ensingen and Johannes Hültz built the north tower. The Fondation de l'Œuvre Notre-Dame has supervised construction and upkeep since at least 1224.

It has Romanesque origins and a Gothic, Rayonnant body of reddish-brown Vosges sandstone. The spire is 466 feet (142 m) high, and the nave is 107 feet (32.6 m) high. It was the world's tallest building from 1647 to 1874. The rose window is given as both 14 m and 13.6 m across.

Bombing damaged it in 1944, and the present astronomical clock dates to 1837 to 1842. UNESCO listed the cathedral in 1988. It is an active Catholic cathedral with an observation level at 217 feet (66 m).
