The Stata Center at MIT was designed by Frank Gehry and first occupied on March 16, 2004. It replaced Building 20, demolished in 1998. The infobox lists Deconstructivism, and the article also likens its style to 1920s German Expressionism. The article gives no construction start or completion date. Major funders included Ray and Maria Stata and Bill Gates, who gave $20 million.
It has about 430,000 square feet (40,000 m2) of academic space and a 290,000-square-foot (27,000 m2) underground garage. A Boston Globe critic describes brick, steel, aluminum and corrugated metal. Above the fourth floor it splits into the Gates and Dreyfoos towers.
It houses CSAIL, LIDS and the Linguistics and Philosophy department, plus a childcare center and a cafe. The ground-floor passage is Charles M. Vest Student Street.
