The Städel Museum in Frankfurt was founded in 1817 after a bequest by the banker Johann Friedrich Städel, and the article names no architectural client. Oskar Sommer designed the 1878 Neo-Renaissance building. Johannes Krahn rebuilt it in 1966 after air-raid damage, Gustav Peichl added an extension for 20th-century works in 1990, and Schneider+Schumacher designed the underground contemporary-art wing that opened in February 2012.
The article names no building materials or dimensions of the 1878 or 1966 structures. The display area grew from 43,000 to 75,000 square feet (4,000 to 7,000 square meters) with the 2012 extension. The infobox is labeled August 2022 but cites 2025 figures.
In 1937 the Nazis confiscated 77 paintings and 700 prints as degenerate art. The collection was evacuated in 1939 to Schloss Rossbach. Renovations followed in 1997 to 1999. The article gives no hours or admission fees.
