The Stadtcasino Basel at Steinenberg is owned by the Stadtcasino-Gesellschaft, a non-profit cultural association established in 1824. Melchior Berri drew plans from 1820 for the original building, which was completed in 1826. A new building was erected after the late 1930s. Herzog & de Meuron studied alterations that were carried out from 2016, and the building officially reopened in 2020. Zaha Hadid's winning design for a new building was rejected by voters in 2007.
The Musiksaal, from 1876, seats 1,500 and is noted for its acoustics. It is the home base of the Sinfonieorchester Basel.
The First Zionist Congress met here in 1897, and ten congresses were held at the Steinenberg premises before 1948.
