St. Nicholas Church in Leipzig began around 1165 as a Romanesque church with twin towers. It was enlarged in the early 16th century in Gothic style and became a Gothic hall church. The article names no architect for the original. Baroque elements include the main tower of 1730 and the portal of 1759. Johann Carl Friedrich Dauthe remodeled the interior in a neoclassical style from 1784 to 1797. It seats over 1,400.
Friedrich Ladegast built the organ in 1862 with four manuals and 84 stops. It now has 106 stops and is the largest organ in Saxony. Johann Sebastian Bach performed works here, including the St John Passion in 1724.
The church has been Protestant since 1539. From 1989 to 1991, Monday evening gatherings here grew into peaceful protests against the government.
