St. Elijah Cathedral in Haifa serves the Melkite Greek Catholics and is the cathedral of the Melkite Greek Catholic Archeparchy of Akka. Sammihom Atallah was the architect, and construction ran from 1938 to 1939. The front is crowned with a cross, a few meters from a small bell tower. The portal depicts the biblical story of the prophet Elijah.
From 1861 the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Akka was the Church of the Virgin Mary in Haifa. After the 1947 to 1949 Arab-Israeli war, most Melkites moved to the lower city, and the bishop's seat moved to St. Elijah's.
The archeparchy was created by a bull of Pope Paul VI. The cathedral follows the Byzantine rite.
