The Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture occupies a stand-alone building at 141 Convent Avenue on the City College of New York campus. It began as a five-story modernist glass-block library from the late 1950s. The college hired Rafael Viñoly in 1999 to renovate it, after the school outgrew Shepard Hall.
Viñoly's firm cut a sky-lit atrium through each floor plate, crossed by stairs and bridges. Open studios have double-height perimeter spaces, and wide corridors offer pin-up space for critiques. Precast concrete cladding carries aluminum sun-shading louvers, and a rooftop amphitheater has a clerestory on three sides.
The school took its name in spring 2009 and moved in that fall. The building is about 135,000 square feet (12,540 square meters). It holds offices, classrooms, computer labs, a library and a fabrication shop.
