The South Carolina State House in Columbia was first designed by P. H. Hammarskold, who was dismissed for fraud and dereliction of duty. John R. Niernsee redesigned it, and his son Frank McHenry Niernsee, Frank Pierce Milburn and Charles Coker Wilson also worked on it. The infobox gives 1855. The text says construction began in 1851, the defective work was largely dismantled and building resumed in 1855. The article names no client.

The main structure was completed in 1875 and the exterior in 1907. The article calls the style Classical Revival. The building is about 180 feet tall, 300 feet long and 100 feet wide, with 130,673 square feet and more than 70,000 short tons. A 1998 renovation re-skinned the dome in copper.

It joined the National Register in 1970 and became a National Historic Landmark in 1976. The article gives no hours.
