The Smolny Institute in Saint Petersburg was designed by Giacomo Quarenghi for the Society for Education of Noble Maidens. The text gives construction from 1806 to 1808. The article calls the style Palladian and gives no materials or dimensions.

The Bolsheviks used it as their headquarters before and during the October Revolution of 1917. Lenin lived there for several months, until the government moved to the Moscow Kremlin in March 1918. Sergei Kirov was assassinated there in 1934.

After 1991 it became the seat of the Saint Petersburg mayor and city administration, and Vladimir Putin worked there from 1991 to 1997. It is now the official residence of the Saint Petersburg governor and houses a museum dedicated to Lenin. The article gives no hours.
