SESC Pompeia in São Paulo was designed by Lina Bo Bardi for the non-profit Serviço Social do Comércio, converting a factory founded in 1938 by Mauser & Cia Ltda. that later made oil drums, refrigerators and kerosene. The infobox gives 1982 as the opening year, while the text says conversion ran from 1977 to 1986 and the center opened on January 22, 1982.
The article calls it brutalist, built throughout in concrete, including two towers and a floor where a pool was excavated. Two sports towers with globular windows are linked by eight walkways, and interior walls were removed. Facilities include a theater, library, sports halls, exhibition rooms and a restaurant, with capacity for 5,000 people daily.
It hosted street art events, including the DULOCO Festival in 1998 and the Pompeia Art Fair in 2003 and 2004. It operates as a cultural and social center. A Metro Line 6 station is planned but not yet open.
