Schloss Altenstein stands on a dolomite hill at the southwest edge of the Thuringian Forest, near Eisenach in Germany. A fire destroyed the old castle in 1733, and Alessandro Rossini designed a Baroque palace in 1736 for Duke Anton Ulrich of Saxe-Meiningen. Albert Neumeister redesigned it in 1888 to 1890 for Duke Georg II, with English-inspired details such as two-story oriels.

The palace was the summer residence of the Dukes of Saxe-Meiningen until the monarchy ended in 1918. A fire on February 4, 1982, destroyed the interiors and the roof. Reconstruction began in 1984, and the festival hall was completed in 2013.

It is surrounded by a 160-hectare English landscape garden. A Brahms memorial museum opened there in May 2017.
