The Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Assisi encloses the Porziuncola, the most sacred place for Franciscans. Galeazzo Alessi and Vignola designed it, and work began on March 25, 1569. Donations financed construction, and Pope Pius V ordered the surrounding buildings removed. The dome was finished in 1667 and the church in 1679, with a bell tower added in 1684. The infobox lists Mannerist and Baroque, and the text says the design was Mannerist and prefigured the Baroque.
An 1832 earthquake collapsed the nave, aisle and choir. Luigi Poletti rebuilt the nave and aisles in a neoclassical Doric style from 1836 to 1840, and he remodeled the facade. Cesare Bazzani restored the facade to its earlier form in 1924 to 1930.
The basilica is 413 feet (126 m) long and 213 feet (65 m) wide.
