San Polo is a Roman Catholic church dedicated to the Apostle Paul, and it gives its name to the San Polo district of Venice. A church has stood on the site since the ninth century, and the current Gothic church dates from the fifteenth. The south doorway survives from the earlier church and is credited to Bartolomeo Bon, possibly. The detached campanile was built in 1362, and the lions at its base date from the twelfth century.
Inside, the roof is shaped like a ship's keel and was restored in 1804 by Davide Rossi. Giandomenico Tiepolo painted the ceiling and the Stations of the Cross. King August III of Poland commissioned Giambattista Tiepolo's painting of the Virgin appearing to St John Nepomuk.
Other works include a Last Supper by Jacopo Tintoretto, a Marriage of the Virgin by Paolo Veronese, and bronze statues of St Paul and St Anthony Abbot by Alessandro Vittoria.
