The San Jacinto Monument stands in unincorporated Harris County, Texas, about 16 miles (26 kilometers) east of downtown Houston on the Houston Ship Channel. Alfred C. Finn designed it with engineer Robert J. Cummins. Construction began on April 21, 1936, and it was dedicated on April 21, 1939.

The monument is 567.31 feet (172.92 meters) tall, about 12 feet taller than the Washington Monument. It is reinforced concrete faced with Texas limestone, in an Art Deco, eight-sided tapering spire. The cost was $1.5 million.

An elevator reaches the observation deck, where the shaft narrows to 30 feet (9 meters) square. The base holds a 15,625-square-foot (1,452-square-meter) museum and a 160-seat theater. The article does not name a sculptor.
