San Giuseppe dei Falegnami stands at Clivo Argentario 1 in Rome, next to the Roman Forum. The Congregation of the Carpenters obtained authorization in 1540 to build a new church on the ruins of Santi Pietro e Paolo in Carcere. Giacomo della Porta began work in 1597. After his death in 1602, Giovanni Battista Montano continued it and designed the facade, and Giovanni Battista Soria took over after 1621. Antonio Del Grande completed the church, which was consecrated on November 11, 1663.

The church is Baroque. Carlo Maratta painted a Nativity for it in 1651. The Chapel of the Crucifix lies between the church floor and the ceiling of the Mamertine Prison, and it was built in 1853.

On August 30, 2018, two-thirds of the carved wooden ceiling collapsed, and the church was closed to the public.
