The Rijksmuseum building in Amsterdam was designed by Pierre Cuypers, who won the competition in 1876. Construction began on October 1, 1876, and it opened on July 13, 1885. The article describes a mix of Gothic and Renaissance elements and names no client or original materials.

The plan has two squares, each with an atrium at its center, a central tunnel with ground-level entrances and a Gallery of Honour on the first floor. The Night Watch hall was rebuilt in 1906, and rooms were built into the courtyards in the 1960s.

Antonio Cruz and Antonio Ortiz led the renovation. The museum closed on December 7, 2003, at a cost of €375 million, and the main building reopened on April 13, 2013. It has been a rijksmonument since 1970 and drew 2,702,824 visitors in 2023.
