Powerhouse Brattørkaia is an office building on the waterfront in Trondheim, Norway, at about 63 degrees north. Snøhetta designed it for the developer Entra ASA, and the project ran from 2012 to 2019. Snøhetta calls it the world's northernmost energy-positive building.
The building has 17,800 square meters (about 192,000 square feet) of floor area. Its skewed, pentagonal roof and upper facade are clad in solar panels covering almost 3,000 square meters. It produces about 500,000 kilowatt-hours of renewable energy each year, more than twice what it uses on average each day. It is certified BREEAM Outstanding.
Seawater provides heating and cooling, and the building recovers heat from ventilation air and greywater. Low-emission concrete is left exposed as thermal mass. A local microgrid serves neighboring buildings, electric vehicles and boats.
