The Pierre Boulez Saal is a chamber music hall in Berlin, designed by Frank Gehry with project designer Craig Webb. It opened in early March 2017. The hall seats 683 people. It was built inside a 1950s four-story masonry shell, a historic landmark whose exterior could not be changed. The shell once stored stage sets for the nearby Berlin State Opera.
Inside, two elliptical forms circle a central stage, and the upper ellipse is a balcony with two rows of seats. The balcony is detached from the outer walls so sound can pass behind it. The floor is hardwood, and Douglas fir panels the walls and ceiling.
The lower bleacher seating can fold into the wall, which opens most of the ground floor. No ground-floor seat is more than 50 feet (15 meters) from the performance area. Yasuhisa Toyota of Nagata Acoustics was the acoustician. The building also houses the Barenboim-Said Akademie.
