Philotheou Monastery lies on the northeastern side of Mount Athos and is dedicated to the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin. It ranks twelfth among the Athonite monasteries. Blessed Philotheus founded it at the end of the 10th century. The article names no architect and gives no style, materials or dimensions.
The Georgian kings Levan of Kakheti and his son Alexander II funded a renovation in 1539 and 1540, and frescoes of them appear in the refectory. A Russian pilgrim, Isaiah, described the monastery as Albanian in the late 15th century, though that rests on a single account.
About 60 working monks live there. The library holds 250 manuscripts and 2,500 printed books. Relics include a hand of Saint John Chrysostom and a piece of the True Cross. Visits are restricted to men.
