Peñafiel Castle stands on a hill in Peñafiel, in the province of Valladolid in Castile and León, Spain. Fernán González began the site in 947 as a frontier outpost against the Arabs, and Sancho García built a castle there in 1013 to protect the surrounding land. Later, Spanish nobles including Juan Manuel and Pedro Girón added to the fortress.
The castle extends more than 200 meters and encloses an area about 35 meters wide. At its center rises a keep of three stories, 34 meters high. Its main material is rock. In 1421 Blanche I of Navarre gave birth to Charles, Prince of Viana, inside the keep.
It was designated a Spanish Property of Cultural Interest in 1917. The municipality owns it, and it houses the Provincial Wine Museum of Valladolid.
