Peckham Library in south London was designed by Alsop and Störmer, associated with Will Alsop, with AKT II as engineer. Southwark London Borough Council operates it as part of Southwark Libraries. It opened to the public on March 8, 2000, and was officially opened on May 15, 2000, by culture secretary Chris Smith. The article gives no construction start and names no style, describing an inverted L shape.
The building has five floors, with the library on the fourth. The ground and first floors hold the information and media center. The exterior is clad in pre-patinated copper, and thin steel pillars set at apparently random angles support the upper part. Raising the building creates public space beneath and moves the quiet reading space away from street noise.
The collection holds 40,848 items, and over half a million people visit each year. It won the Stirling Prize in 2000.
