Pearl River Tower stands in Tianhe, Guangzhou, and is also called the Guangdong Tobacco Building. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill designed it, with Adrian Smith and Gordon Gill. The article calls the style neo-futurist. China National Tobacco Corporation owns it and partly occupies it. Groundbreaking was on September 8, 2006, and it was completed on March 12, 2011.
It is 1,016 feet (309.6 m) tall with 71 floors above ground and 212,165 square meters of floor area. A double-skin facade, triple glazing, photovoltaic shading cells and radiant ceiling cooling reduce energy use. The article says it uses about 40% of what a building of its size normally uses.
Wind turbines were meant to be fed by channels through the building. Local rules barred selling power to the grid, so the micro-turbines were removed.
