The Oriental Pearl Tower stands in Lujiazui in Shanghai, on the Huangpu River bank opposite the Bund. Shanghai Modern Architectural Design Co. Ltd. designed it for the developer Shanghai Oriental Group Co. Ltd. Construction began on July 30, 1991, and the tower opened on May 1, 1995.

It is 1,535 feet (468 meters) tall including the antenna, and the top floor sits at 1,152 feet (351 meters). Integral steel-framed spheres are covered in concrete tiles and laminated red glass. Deep concrete pillars with steel pipes and plates support the foundation.

Three spheres are linked by pillars and an elevator. The tower has fifteen observatory levels, a revolving restaurant, an indoor roller coaster, museums, glass floors and a 20-room hotel called the Space Hotel.
