The Opernhaus of the Staatstheater Nürnberg was built from 1903 to 1905 in the Art Nouveau style. The architect was Heinrich Seeling. The building opened in 1905, and a reference title in the source gives September 1, 1905, as the inauguration date. The source describes it as one of the largest theatres in Germany.

The building was originally called the Städtische Bühnen Nürnberg. The company took its current name on January 1, 2005. The Staatstheater is one of four Bavarian state theatres and presents opera, plays, ballet and concerts.

Other venues include the Schauspielhaus, with its smaller Kammerspiele and BlueBox stages, and the Meistersingerhalle, where the Staatsphilharmonie Nürnberg performs. Joana Mallwitz was General Music Director from 2018 to 2023, the first woman to hold that post at the company.
