The Opéra de Lyon on Place de la Comédie was first inaugurated in 1831. The city decided to rebuild it, and Jean Nouvel redesigned it between 1985 and 1993, with the scenography agency dUCKS scéno and the acoustician Peutz. The existing foyer and exterior facade were retained.
A steel and glass barrel vault now crowns the building and conceals the fly tower and the space for the ballet company. The space was tripled and the height doubled. The article describes the auditorium as essentially Italian, with a horseshoe shape and tiers of boxes, and it seats 1,100.
Rehearsal space is underground. Backstage space remains limited, as in the 19th-century theater.
