One Astor Plaza, also called 1515 Broadway, is a 54-story office tower on Times Square. Der Scutt of Ely J. Kahn & Jacobs was the principal architect. Sam Minskoff and Sons developed it after buying the former Hotel Astor site in 1966. Construction began on October 10, 1968, though the infobox gives 1969. It was completed in 1972. The article calls its design a departure from earlier International Style buildings.
The roof is 745 feet (227 m) high, though another source gives 730 feet. The facade is largely dark glass, with stone-clad mechanical shafts ending in pinnacles. The 1,621-seat Minskoff Theatre is on the third floor.
A window-washing scaffold collapse in March 1972 killed two workers. The building faced bankruptcy proceedings in 1990, withdrawn in December 1991. Kohn Pedersen Fox completed a $40 million renovation in 2009, and a car-bombing attempt outside in May 2010 was defused.
