The Olympic Stadium in Montreal was designed by the French architect Roger Taillibert, who was fired in 1974 before it was finished. The Régie des Installations Olympiques, a Quebec government body, was the client. Groundbreaking was on April 28, 1973, and it opened unfinished on July 17, 1976 for the Summer Olympics. The tower and roof were completed in April 1987. The article calls the style Organic Modern, based on plant and animal forms.

The pre-stressed concrete stadium has a 165-meter (541-foot) Montreal Tower inclined at 45 degrees, described as the world's tallest inclined tower. Permanent seating is 56,040. The original Kevlar retractable roof opened and closed only 88 times, and a new roof was approved in 2017.

The Olympic pool lies beneath the tower. The former velodrome is now the Montreal Biodome. The stadium connects directly to Pie-IX metro station.
