The Nukus Museum of Art in Karakalpakstan was established in 1966 after the Russian painter, archaeologist and collector Igor Savitsky persuaded Karakalpak authorities to create a state museum. He became its first curator, and the first holdings were archaeological finds, copies of classical antiquities and Karakalpak folk art, mostly collected by him. The article names no architect, style, materials or dimensions.

A new building was constructed in 2003, and the site was later expanded with two additional buildings, extra exhibition space and a purpose-built archive and storage center.

The collection holds over 82,000 items, about 10,000 of them avant-garde works, which the article says is second in size only to that of the Russian Museum. Tigran Mkrtychev was appointed director in 2019. Marinika Babanazarova was fired in 2015.
